Once upon a time in a town far far away... ok, it was a few years back in Buffalo where Cheetah and WNY Storm combined to create the force now known as Niagara Frontier.

Would the same idea fly in the rochester area if the current clubs combined and created one Super club?

Many posters were instrumental in the Niagara Frontier transition, what insight would you have looking back.

Are that many players turning down Volley FX to go to Xtreme or Rave? I thought VFX is "super club"?

Xtreme, Rave, Premiere, Crossroads, some new clubs. I wouldn't say players are turning down VFX, especially at the 1s level. But at 2s and below the other clubs are somewhat more attractive pricewise or geographically. If Rochester had a nice centralized practice facility like the BNCC, say in Henrietta, then I could see a super club possibility. The armory is not the long term answer.

RVE- yes, first year of existence
Mercy- Assuming yes since it's new also (I think?)
FCVC- same as above?
Sting- usually arrives later in the season full of Byron Bergen kids.

The Rochester Volley Elite Club is new this year. VFX and Premiere both reduced the number of teams they had at the 17 level. This club is forming to offer players with potential who did not make another club team or could not afford a more expesive club an opportunity to play year round.
Also, for the record- there are girls that turned down VFX 1s to play for more affordable clubs- some play for Premiere.

VFX- not a super club in my opinion.
They have 11 teams I think? NFVB at my last count had 34.

Many clubs in Rochester. Not the case in Buffalo.

There were many clubs in Buffalo before the merger, or maybe mergers: buffalo storm, wny reebok, cheetah, cheetah west, before that eden vbc and powerstation. Then there were/are varous clubs further from the city: wny stars, clarence little devils, java, keva, cobra.

It's not just a central location that is needed. In NFVB's first year, they had practice sites all over the place--anywhere they could get a gym. What's most needed is a submerging of egos, a genuine desire to work with and listen to others in order to present a better product for kids. If one or more clubs believe what they presently have IS a superior product and that compromising with others will not better it, then room for merger is not there. Some people or situations are better suited to merger and compromise; others gravitate to takeover (and sometimes elimination). No judgment here--it's the same as in the business. world.

Flower City VBC is going to start as an outdoor club, this summer 2010. If the interest warrants an indoor team then we will have one starting fall 2010.

I think NFVB provides teams for the upper, middle, lower skilled players which IMO makes it a comprehensive club. They have something for everyone. I tend to agree with Barre in terms of what is needed for a comprehensive club to survive.

I guess it depends on what your definition of a "super" club is, but I think VFX has taken a step back this year. IF the information on their website is correct, they really only have 8 teams now. No 13-2s, 14-2s or 15-2s and their 12s programs looks like it is a series of 8 week camps that I do not know if they even play any tournaments. I am not sure what the Clubs "Mission" is but it looks like they are focussed on "elite" (older) girls without growing talent internally (reduction in 13s, 14,s 15s to only one team each). This is not the trend that you want to see to further the sport, but it may just be a sign of the economy that they dont have the enough yonger girls due to being the more expensive club in the area?

Well stated AVBfan, if a club is not nurturing their younger teams where will they get their talent from?

Super Club, for lack of a better term is the development of a comprehensive club that provides an opportunity for all ages and talent levels to learn the sport of volleyball in a central location. If you look at Niagara Frontier, they offer "in house" leagues where players are able to receive instruction and play once a week all the way up to their National teams that place very well in large tournaments. Another item that NF has implemented is coaching the same technique from top to bottom with many instructors "floating" from team to team to enforce which is an area that many local clubs fall short. Congratulations to NF for all they have done in their region.

Well discussed opinions of all aspects of volleyball and the trend for decreasing size may be a direct response to the economy.
NF having all coaches stay along the same coaching technique is huge. Sometimes individual coaches egos take over and that can not be accomplished. Hats off to them for striving for that.
Gym space is at a premium down in Orange Cty. School districts seem to be willing to "rent" the gym space for "Club" teams that are exclusive to each school district. Too bad. because this is a missed opportunity for the girls to meet and grow with other girls and ease the unfamiliarity of entering a University, only knowing girls from their school. After all as parents, don't we want our children to be well rounded young adults when entering their true formulative years, at the college level. When Mom and Dad are only there to support the children and watch them grow.

I can't speak to the VFX 13s and up programs but I know that the situation for the 12s level is very different from what is described by a couple of posts in this string. There will be what we loosely consider four 12s teams this year. The concept of 8 week sessions allows the very young first year players to give volleyball a try without a year long committment on their part. It also allows us to be more fluid in terms of who is playing on each team so if a player is showing particular promise, they can be moved to a more appropriate team at the start of the next "session". The 1s team will stay unchanged for the most part for the whole year. They will (tentatively) go to tournament in Rochester, Buffalo, possibly Albany, and Pennsylvania. The 2s will go to some tournaments as well.

what would the "ideal" facility need to host multiple club teams? and are clubs looking for such a thing?

Idealy, a large open floorplan with uninterrupted floorspace to accomodate 6-10 courts with room for spectators. 30+ foot ceilings, locker rooms/bathrooms, viewing areas, concessions, retail space, conference rooms, and work out facilities. On the side would be a larger arena for playoffs and other events that would accomodate a large spectator event. We can include office space for event coordinators, officials, and a WEVA Region office (looking to charge someone some rent).

So if you have something of this sort in your back yard that is centrally located and would like to donate it to a non-profit org, let us know....

oh also the 3-4 million to have that built-- sounds about right though. I would want a viewing overlook to go the whole length of the facility, like northern lights has.

Oh, and if you want to rent it out for leagues, events, etc, better have someone who wants to take on being in charge of the facility.
