Phil is a great coach and a great guy. He is knowledgable, communicates well, and will no doubt do well with the kids. When Phil was setting for my team against the Behrend boys back in a tournament in December, I could tell he already had a good relationship with them and had to hold back coaching them through the net.
When talking with Phil about his recruiting for girls, his initial comment about recruiting outside of PA was the considerable price difference. However, with girls, the market is saturated with players and places to play. With boys, the number of D3 programs pale in comparison. So maybe another opportunity locally will draw some players. I can say that any person who plays under Phil will learn a great deal.
There are a couple of schools through the Penn-Ohio Club league that could turn D3 varsity and be very successful, Grove City being one (I'm biased). In the article it mentioned that Theil moved their club team to Varsity level. Must be something new going on there, because Theil used to be awful in club. Many of the schools in that league are varsity D1 or D2 (Pitt, Duquesne, IUP, Gannon)...
Anyway, congrats to Phil. |
