Finals:
Class A
No. 1 Penfield 15-8-15-15, No. 3 Fairport 7-15-12-6: The match wasn't
over, but Peter Mathis sensed the end and a Section V title for
Penfield was near. Penfield fans were on their feet cheering Mathis
and his teammates just before the Chiefs finished off Fairport 15-7,
8-15, 15-12, 15-6 in last night's Class A final at Webster.
After the match was over, Mathis, named the tournament's most valuable
player after he finished with a team-high 18 kills, received a hug
from his teary-eyed mother, Karen.
"This is awesome. We worked hard for this," he said. "This is all
we wanted to do. It's been a lot of blood, sweat and glory."
It has been quite a season for the Chiefs (25-2), who advance to
the regional tournament in Liverpool on Saturday after they claimed
their first sectional title since 1994.
Mathis missed a chunk of it, four weeks to be exact, after fracturing
his wrist during a regular season match. He returned to action in
the second round of the tournament.
"I could practice but I couldn't play with the cast on," Mathis
said. "I lost some of my skills but with practice I got them back.
"It's my last year, so I had to make it back."
Sean Ehlers had 58 assists and all-tournament team pick James Kirchoff
added 13 kills for Penfield, which lost in last year's semifinals
with a lineup of underclassmen.
"Once (Mathis) came back, it was weird having him back," Kirchoff
said. "Our chemistry was off. "We are a well-rounded team but Pete
is one of the biggest parts."
Before the match, Penfield coach Mike Fusare urged his team to
play with "no regrets". He also was aware of Fairport's improvement
despite losing to Penfield twice in the regular season.
"It hasn't really sunk in with me, but I'm really happy for our
coach," Kirchoff said. "He wanted it so bad. "He's always talking
about having that trophy."
After the Chiefs handled the Red Raiders in the first game, Fairport
won the first two points in the second. The teams were tied at 7-7
before the Red Raiders won 15-8. Penfield led 13-8 in the third
game but called a time-out after Fairport cut the margin to two.
Then Fairport's Josh Tompkins (8 kills, 9 service points and 5 blocks)
served an ace. Fairport's momentum ended after the Red Raiders failed
to dig out a ball and Rich Newton's kill gave Penfield a 14-11 lead.
A tip by Mathis sealed the game. The Chiefs then won four of the
first five and 10 of the first 13 points of game four.
All-tournament team:
Peter Mathis (MVP/Penfield)
Brian Marconi (Penfield)
James Kirchoff (Penfield)
Josh Tompkins (Fairport)

Class B
Midlakes 15-11-15-5-15, North Rose-Wolcott 12-15-8-15-11: It took
more of an effort then they thought they would need, but the Midlakes
Screaming Eagles returned home with the Section V Class B boys volleyball
trophy.
Sophomore Rick Lanszoot had 58 assists as Midlakes defeated North
Rose-Wolcott in five games 15-12, 11-15, 15-8, 5-15, 15-11 in last
night's final at Webster High.
Lanszoot was named the tournament's most valuable player for helping
lead Midlakes to its first title since 1994. He was joined on the
all-tournament team by teammates Chris Hildreth (27 kills) and Kyle
Wyjad 44 kills).
Midlakes beat NR-W twice during the regular season, but the Cougars'
blockers gave the Screaming Eagles problems until the end of the
match.
After Midlakes easily won the third game, the Cougars won seven
of the first, eight points in game four. "We took them too lightly,"
Hildreth said. "(The wake-up call) when they were up 10-2 in the
fourth game."
Midlakes won four of the first six points and led ,8-5 " when the
teams switched sides during the fifth game.
The score was tied 8-8 when the Screaming Eagles took control of
the match by winning next three points.
NR-W's last stand came when Earl LaMora's well-placed shot moved
the Cougars 11-13 of Midlakes.
But Lanszoot earned point No. 14 with a strategic hit and Hildreth
ended the match with an emphatic spike.
"They were a very good team," Lanszoot said.
NR-W senior Jermel a twisted his left ankle during the second game,
but iced it between games and finished with 18 kills, 5 blocks,
7 digs and 11 points serving. Mike Shear had 40 assists for the
Cougars (12-9), who reached the semifinals last year.
"They are a scrappy they never give up," NR-W coach Donna
Donselaar said. "I feel the same way about my team."
"They don't have to hang their heads, it just didn't work out"
Midlakes is in the state tournament regional final at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday at Liverpool High, where it will face the Section VI (Buffalo-area)
champion. There is no full-fledged tournament in the fall because
not enough sections offer the sport during this time of year.
All-tournament team:
Rick Lanszoot (MVP, Midlakes)
Chris Hildreth (Midlakes)
Kyle Wyjad (Midlakes)
Terrance Collier (NRW)
Jermel Brawn (NR-W)
Joel Cortes (Victor)
Dominick Szpyrka (Eastridge)
Coach of the year: Kyle Salisbury (Midlakes)
