I am new to this site as well as not being from the Rochester area. Here on Long Island no one seems to get any information about the all state selections. We were all stunned when, from this very site, we learned that my daughter had been selected last year. We didn't learn about it until this October which meant we couldn't include it when we sent information out tot he schools she was interested in. So I am curious as to when the teams are announced and what is the best source for them.

Thanks

Kevin

Hi It is my understanding that it is not well published. Mike Harnden one of the coaches in the area said that the coaches vote on it and then the state accumulates the votes. I think that it is not published until the spring sometime. Mike is the one who runs this web site and I am surprised that he has not responded to you yet. He was Leighs' coach last year in club and that is how I know a little about this.Mike help.

This is how it was done . . . I can relate the changes that I know of at the end.

For the past number of years, the All-State Team selection process has been run by Perry Novak, the editor of NYSSCOGS. Somehow, I'm not sure how, each Section in the state was allotted a certain number of slots on the All-State Teams. The slots were pre-determined before the players were picked for the teams.

An example of this is last years teams. https://www.rochestervball.com/highschool/all_state_2001.asp?Class=A
If you look at the First Team in Class A, a slot was reserved for a player from the Spring season. I never saw an updated list, so that's is why they are not filled in the listing on the website.

How each Section determined their players was up to each Section. I am aware of how Section V did it in the Fall and Winter seasons.

In the Fall, players were selected by Section officials who watched the Sectional Tournament. The players from the Monroe County League were determined by the coaches in end of season voting.

At the end of last year there was a lot controversy on how the teams were selected, announced etc. If you were not a member of NYSSCOGS (and paid the $20 annual membership), you may have had no idea that one of your players was selected to a team. I was told at the end of last season, that the Sections were going to petition the State to take control of the selection process back. I'm pretty sure that has happened. I just don't know the whole process know. When I do, I'll let you know.

Sorry for the delay in helping out, I haven't looked at the Discussion Board for a few days.

Hope this helps . . .

Mike

Mike;
I appreciate your answer and you don't need to go to any special trouble to find out how they are selected this year. I just found it ironic, especially in light of your answer about last year, that the Wantagh H.S. AD who is a member of NYSSCOGS, and well as being the Section 8 Director of Volleyball, had no idea that there were kids on the Wantagh team selected all state. As I mentioned earlier, for those kids selected as underclassmen, it is a nice honor to include in their personal bio for colleges if they learn about it in time.
