From the seeding points, it looks like we are set up for a Sutherland - Victor final. I don't see Arcadia or Mercy winning in the semis. Should be a great final.

Mercy blew past Suthernland and made it to the finals last year and their team is looking even better this year with the new coach
If Victor and Mercy are in the finals it should be an interesting game considering they have yet to play one another. |

Mercy was looking pretty bulletproof until a late season loss to Newark brought them back down to Earth. CJ has definitely made them mentally tougher than they have been in years and a tough potential semis match for Victor, but I think Victor's defense will eventually wear them down. Victor in 4. Assuming a Victor/Sutherland final (not a foregone conclusion yet!) Sutherland's size will test Victor's defense but unlike their first regular season match, I have Victor in 3!

Bulletproof? Mercy barely beat Thomas in 5 and where are they now? out of the first round of Sectionals cuz of Fairport. They barely beat Nazareth in 5 and not to disrespect Nazareth but if they are so focused with big names from club for players and there coach, how did Nazareth fair so well? must be the Nazareth coach has his team focused. Mercy lost to Pittsford in 3 and 2 games with Athena go 25-22 . the scores looked weird if not close versus Gates-Chili and I understand from some players that they beat Wayne in 3 with scores 25-20 in 2 games without Turner and 2 other starters, if that's the case then they should have crushed them. Then Newark wins in 4 just shows that they are not bulletproof and the rest of the stuff i said doesn't= mental toughness in my book. just my thoughts and sorry if this sounds like I'm ripping other teams because I'm really not, technically I'm not ripping Mercy I just don't think Mercy looks any better or worsre than last year like some people say but if thegirls feel better with a new coach then i hope they show it
victor in 3 |

Hey OldSkool, you ask, "how did Nazareth fair so well?"
Well how about the possibility that maybe Nazareth is a pretty good team? |

In addition to Nazareth being a "pretty good team" they are also very well coached. As are Webster Thomas, Livonia(#1 B seed), Webster Schroeder(#1 AA seed and #6 Large School Poll), WI(# 2 AA seed and #1 Large School Poll), Pittsford Sutherland(#3 A seed and #4 Large School Poll) and Newark(#1 BB Seed and # 7 Large School Poll). All of these teams make up the very demanding Mercy schedule, one of the toughest in Section V this year. A 16-3 record deserves more respect than you are apparently willing to give them but I guarantee that Coach Collins (Victor) is smart enough not to overlook them. If you are still hung up on my choice of the word "bulletproof", let me replace it with the phrase, "pretty darn good"!

For Mercy to beat Victor, they will need:
1] A big match from their setter and libero 2] Lots of kills and leadership from the seniors 3] Their other players to minimize their hitting mistakes But even this might not be enough if Victor is on their game. Good luck to both teams! |

Right volleydad! Naz is very good. The point of the post I did is taking ALL the examples together into acount-not just Naz-to give a different OPINION than vballbunny sayin Mercy is better this year than last year and zenvball saying their bulletproof and better focused. I never said Mercy wasn't good just that all those facts don't add up to Mercy being better than last year even with a new coach. And zen seems to agree since he or she changed his or her statement of them being bulletproof to "pretty darn good" cuz I agree their pretty darn good like last year but not any better and I have seen them play a couple times this year and a couple times last year including sectionals. like I said, if the girls feel more focused like zen said then good for them i just don't see a difference in their play.

Anything can happen. There have been upsets before for a variety of reasons so I would not discount/dismiss any team just yet.
Just a side note: I have noticed that Mercy tends to play some less focused, less experienced, less technical players more than some of their more focused, experienced and technical players and I think that has hurt them.
quote:
Originally posted by Vballobserver For Mercy to beat Victor, they will need: 1] A big match from their setter and libero 2] Lots of kills and leadership from the seniors 3] Their other players to minimize their hitting mistakes But even this might not be enough if Victor is on their game. Credit Penfield with not giving up after losing the first two games to a very pumped Fairport squad. Fairport couldn't close out the match though with several errors coming on both sides of the net. Tough loss for Fairport after the 2-0 lead. Congratulations to all of the semifinal teams! |

Sutherland and Victor both won in 3. Victor scores are on the sectional bracket link but Sutherland's isn't. 3rd game with Athena wasn't very close.
