Beyond that they were incredibly lowly seeded and pulled it off.

Hot Shots Indoor Volleyball Center will be hosting another BOYS & GIRLS doubles tournament this Saturday, February 8th.

Check in starts at 8:30am, so that means no late sleepovers Friday night. The tournament starts promptly at 9am.

Don't forget to play in this tournament you must be 18 years old or under.

Early Registration by Wednesday at 9pm is $40/team, Registration Fee until Friday @ 3pm is $45/Team & Day of Registration is $50/team.

Everyone....

Now that you are done stuffing your faces and opening presents, it's time to head back to the sand for some Juniors Coed volleyball. This Monday, December 30th there is a Juniors Coed volleyball tournament at Hot Shots Indoor Volleyball Center.

The tournament starts at 10am with a 9:30am check in time for all teams. The cost for the tournament runs between $20-$25 depending on when you register, and as always, you need to be a NOVA member to play. If you aren't a NOVA member yet, you can register for it the morning of the event.

Again on tonight.
Kerri Walsh didn't make it to that far.
It was fun to see a glimpse of Summer Ross and Emily Day's victory though. Summer is quite a nice young lady. Good to see her succeeding.
2nd match showed a very solid German team trumping Lauren Fendrick/Brittany Hochevar. The German team was just better on d, staying stopped to make reads on the ball before moving, and sided out efficiently.
Scott Davenport, Greece Olympia graduate, currently coaches the Canadian women's team. So, it was interesting to watch the final match, too.
Final match showed Sarah Pavan, who played a few years ago in a NOVA event and her Canadian partner, 5'7" Heather Bansley who hustled her butt off. They almost knocked off the top seeded Brazilian squad! Once Pavan learns to hit on two & block cross, they will be awesome!

This Sunday, July 28th we will be running 3 divisions of Juniors volleyball at Charlotte Beach per the request of the players. The 3 divisions will be......

1. Coed Juniors
2. Boys Juniors
3. Girls Juniors

This is an underground tournament that isn't listed on the NOVA website. This event is a fundraiser for the Mercy High School varsity volleyball team.

The cost of the tournament is $50 per team. There is no additional fee for this event. Check in for the event is 9:15am with a 10am start time!!!

This Saturday, July 20th NOVA is running a Juniors and Adult grass 4s tournament to support Lolly Pop Farm and their mission to place homeless animals with caring families in the Rochester area.

There will be 6 different levels of competition that include......

It didn't start out too well. Iffy day, a lot of sprinkles and some coldness, and then Stein's taxi driver didn't know his way to the beach.

Still had a great turnout, almost 40 kids and the sprinkling rain let up for a few hours. We had some ultra young ones.

A lot of enthusiasm, a lot of fun and three hours later, the camp was a done deal. Kids were truly inspired!

Not since Canadians Sarah Pavan stopped by or the days of John Child and Mark Heese have we had volleyball OLYMPIANS here! ... and to have one helping grow the sport was huge!

Thanks to USA volleyball and Stein for coming out! ...and also thanks to NOVA and the grizzled beach veterans & kind enthusiasts who lent a free hand!

USA junior beach volleyball is double dipping this summer in Rochester!
Saturday, one of the four USA skills clinic, followed the next day by the Great Lakes Open.

New for 2013 will be the USA Junior Beach National Ranking. All participants in the Junior Beach Tour will receive national ranking points for every event they enter. Point leaders at the end of the season will be invited to Holiday High Performance Camp. Also new for 2013, the tour will include both â€œOpenâ€ and â€œGrand Slamâ€ events. Grand Slam events will offer five bids per division to the National Championships and extra ranking points.

USA Volleyball has released a preliminary schedule for the tour, which will peak at the National Championships to be held July 27-28 in Milwaukee, Wis. Teams can earn bids to compete in the Open Division at the National Championships in preceding Junior Beach Tour Events. There will also be a Club Division that will be open to anyone.

Also on the schedule are four Beach Skills Clinics, paid for by a grant from Proctor & Gamble, to be held in conjunction with the Tour events in Omaha, Chicago, Seattle and Rochester, N.Y. Beach Skills Clinics are aimed at exposing new participants to the sport of beach volleyball.

How To Succeed By April Ross

One of the most common questions I get asked is â€œwhat advice would you give young kids trying to succeed?â€.

I always say number one is hard work. Hard work is NOT just showing up to practice for two hours and being satisfied with getting through it. Hard work IS showing up to practice a half hour early to work on stuff youâ€™re not satisfied with. Then while in practice trying to be the best in every single drill and striving to be perfect at every single skill. You should be pissed if you mess up, and definitely, absolutely, positively NEVER EVER laugh if you make a mistake! Hard work IS running sprints at the park on your day off to become faster than your teammates and opponents who ARENâ€™T putting in the extra work. Hard work IS hitting that wall, being completely exhausted, and finding your fourth/fifth wind to accomplish the goals in a drill. Itâ€™s being determined to lift the most in the weight room, run the mile the fastest, and jump the highest. Itâ€™s doing whatever it takes to be the best and once youâ€™re the best, doing whatever it takes to become perfect. Youâ€™re probably not working as hard as you possibly can right now, but itâ€™s never too late to change that.

Number two is developing an unshakeable focus and mental strength. This, just like physical skill, takes practice and discipline. Itâ€™s the difference between going through the motions in drills and really making sure youâ€™re doing skills right in order to ingrain them into your brain so that once in competition you donâ€™t have to think about it, you just do it. Becoming a focused athlete means leaving everything outside the gym besides what youâ€™re there to do. Have a ridiculous amount of homework? Itâ€™s not going to get done while youâ€™re at practice so you might as well not think about it while youâ€™re in the gym. Family trouble? Boy drama? In a fight with a friend? Same thing- leave it be while at practice or competition and stay focused on the present (a good life lesson as well!). Another tool is visualizing before and after every practice and match. If you did a particular thing wrong, visualize doing it the right way over and over before attempting it at the next session. Playing a daunting opponent? Picture their weaknesses and see yourself exploiting them over and over again. My favorite time to visualize is the night before at bedtime, that way when I go to sleep it really sinks into my brain. The mental part of sports is JUST as important as the physical part, so it cannot be neglected (especially in volleyball)!

Number three is sacrifice. You have to make succeeding a priority. I can remember when I was a freshman in high school on varsity and my mom got soooo mad because my coach said I couldnâ€™t miss a practice to celebrate my grandfatherâ€™s 80th birthday with my entire extended family. You might say, well, itâ€™s more important to be there for your grandpaâ€™s birthday with the fam, but then youâ€™re making that the priority (which is also perfectly fine if thatâ€™s what you want!). Sacrifice is not easy, and I feel like itâ€™s lost itâ€™s meaning to some people. I pretty much sacrificed a social life in high school to play three sports throughout the year, but I made varsity in every sport and went to the state championships in high jump my freshman year. You have to decide how much you want to succeed and a good benchmark is what youâ€™re willing to give up to do itâ€¦. Partying on the weekends? Spending a ton of time with a boyfriend/girlfriend? Thinking about what youâ€™re going to wear to school tomorrow rather than how youâ€™re going to improve in (insert activity here)? You might not want to succeed bad enough.

Finally, say yes to opportunities! I can remember saying no to one particularly big opportunity in my life because I was scared of failing, but luckily my coach didnâ€™t listen and put me on our top 18s club team as a sophomore anyway and I canâ€™t tell you how thankful I am for that! Confidence is built by pushing your comfort levels (saying yes to an opportunity), doing something that scares you and conquering it. I used to hate practicing with people who were better than me because Iâ€™d get hammered (and even embarrassed in some situations), but thatâ€™s when I improved the most! Now I take the opportunity to practice with anyone who I think will give me a challenge even if thereâ€™s a good chance Iâ€™m going to lose and get frustrated and probably hate it while itâ€™s happening. Join teams and clubs and say hi to people at school, have all your doors open all the time, you never know what could come through for you. Looking back, one of the things Iâ€™m most proud of is taking advantage of opportunities. Most of the time it sucks at first, like playing beach volleyball. I didnâ€™t know how it was going to go, but I wanted to give it a shot and I was terrible at first, however, I kept saying yes. I said yes when veteran players asked me to play with them even though I didnâ€™t think I was ready, I went to international tournaments when I had no idea what I was doing, but all that experience adds up and has helped me get to where I am today. **Iâ€™m not saying just jump head first into everything that comes your way, but make sure you give each opportunity considerable thought and if it has the potential to make you more successful down the line, do it.

Those are my main pieces of adviceâ€¦I feel itâ€™s important to strive for success and to be the best not only for an individualâ€™s future in sports or their career, but because itâ€™s such a crucial cornerstone of American culture and I believe our country is suffering because this mentality is not as prevalent today as it might have been a decade or two ago, when our parents were growing up. So suck it up, push through the pain, and kick some butt!!

It was a great day of volleyball as the athletes battled the elements and each other and showed why this area has some of the best junior beach volleyball action on the East Coast.

The National Volleyball League (The NVL) will host its first event of the season, a two-day $50,000 tournament on May 18-19 in Baltimore, Md. where 2008 Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) will make their 2012 domestic debut.

â€œPhil and I are very excited at the opportunity to compete on U.S. soil in the National Volleyball Leagueâ€™s season-opening event,â€ Rogers said. â€œLast yearâ€™s event at the Preakness was a huge success with thousands of people watching and we wanted to be a part of it this year. The tournament will take place in Baltimore Beach and the Pimlico Race Course infield on Preakness Day. The Main Draw will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, May 18th at Baltimore Beach and will run all day. Athletes will battle in two featured evening matches at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. with the winners moving into the semifinals. The men's and women's semifinals and finals will be played during Preakness InfieldFest at Pimlico on Saturday, May 19 with the men's final at 2 p.m. and the women's final at 3:30 p.m.

â€œLast year was a huge success and we look forward to building on this momentum leading into the Olympic games,â€ said Albert Hannemann, CEO and Founder of The NVL. â€œThe NVL was created by players for the players and weâ€™re thrilled at the level of competition, including gold medalists and Olympians, who will be competing at the NVL Baltimore Preakness event. Partnering with The NVL through Corrigan Sports for a second year at the Preakness, Maryland Jockey Club President Tom Chukas says the new dynamic in the Infield is paying off. â€œThe proof is in the pudding this year with the Olympic teams competing at Pimlico on Preakness Day,â€ he says. â€œThis just illustrates how far we have come since changing the landscape in the Infield in 2009. What a big coup for us to have Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers here just two months prior to the London Games.â€

The NVL played its first pro season in 2011, creating a new model for the sport by producing tournaments in conjunction with large scale consumer lifestyle events like the Preakness. This year, the NVL is scheduled to host six professional tournaments and 25 collegiate events in partnership with â€œKing of the Beachâ€ Sinjin Smith and his National Collegiate Sand Volleyball Association. NVL events are sanctioned by USA Volleyball and players who compete will receive a USA Volleyball national ranking.

I agree Title IX is a larger culprit. As much success as it's had in providing opportunities for girls and women, unfortunately it's come at the expense of many men's sports. No disagreement there.

However, every time I get my AVCA magazine it seems they are promoting the heck out of the sand college game and working to help grow the sport. The organization provides great outreach for collegiate women's volleyball, but over the last 20 or so years has done very little to try and grow the men's college game, particularly at the D1/D2 level where there are now basically about 25 schools.

Won't be long before there are more women's sand teams than men's indoor teams.

Here's a parent's testimonial from their experience at last years HP Beach Camp......

Last May, as a result of the incessant nagging of CJ Denk and at great personal cost I might add (missing her cousinâ€™s First Communion party?) my daughter Terese decided to try out for the USAV Beach High Performance Camps.Â It was convenient in that the USAV Beach team of coaches selected Rochester NY as one of their national try-out sites.Â Looking at the try-out schedule, Rochester is mixed in with the likes of Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach, San Diego, San Francisco, Miami, Tampa, Houston, Chicago etc. â€“ you know, the usual suspects that might be associated with Rochester sportsâ€¦..

Anyway, she participated in a four hour session with this countryâ€™s top Beach Volleyball coaches.Â If this was the extent of her exposure to USAV Beach HP, the session would have been worth 5X the $75 fee to participate.Â As it turned out, Terese was fortunate enough to be invited to participate in a national Tournament in California as well as a couple of development camps during the course of the year.Â The experience was exceptional, and the access to such a program in our own back yard provides an extraordinary opportunity to our local volleyball community.Â Terese will be back this year along with her younger sister Hannah.Â I highly recommend the four hour session for anyone who enjoys the game â€“ it is really a great event hosted by a great group of people that share your enthusiasm for the sport!

Pool play format followed by single elimination playoffs

Here's the newest twist to our tourneys......boys & girls 14 & under will compete against each other in pool play, but will have separate playoffs. This is the 1st time we are trying this at one of our events. The idea is to get some of the younger guys involved without the fear of playing the older, more experienced guys.

USAV Releases Beach HP Tryout Schedule

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 9, 2012) â€“ USA Volleyball has announced the schedule of 2012 Beach High Performance (HP) Tryouts for athletes looking to compete on beach volleyball national teams.

Tryouts are open to all beach athletes ages 12 to 25 who were born between Jan. 1, 1987 and Dec. 31, 2000. Registration for tryouts will open on Feb. 22.

Selected athletes will comprise the Future Select-U15, Select-U17, Youth-U19, Junior-U21, and Senior A2-U26 beach national teams representing the United States in various national and international competitions including the Beach High Performance Championships on July 18-22 in Hermosa Beach, California.

Tryouts will be led by USA Volleyball beach staff. All athletes will receive a written evaluation and do not need to sign up with a partner.

Each tryout will include 4 hours of beach time where athletes will receive instruction and strive to be selected for one of the USAV Beach High Performance Programs. Athletes are evaluated and ranked based on the entire tryout population from across the country.

Registration and a fee of $70 per tryout are required; athletes may attend more than one tryout.

Participants must be USAV members. A membership link will be provided for those who are not verified as current USAV members.

New to the USAV Beach HP Programs will be a Select and Future Select National Training Team for boys and girls born 1996-2000.

Lausanne, Switzerland, February 8, 2012 - Czech pair Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova have taken a novel approach to gaining support ahead of their final push for a place at the London 2012 Olympic Games with a new stop-motion video promoting their website.

The duo, who competed on 12 FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour events in 2011 as well as the SWATCH World Championships, feature in the clip which was uploaded to their YouTube channel on Saturday in an effort to ramp up support ahead of the new season.

At the moment Kolocova and Slukova are in line for a place at the Games, lying 13th in the Olympic rankings. However, with six events to go until the official cut off point following the Rome Grand Slam, they will be hoping to put in a number of consistent performances to book their place at Horse Guards Parade in July and August.

April and Jen were 99.9% sure they were not going to play in this event, that loomed like a nagging sandfly this season. There's so much anger towards the AVP, especially by top players, that even the "injured and tired" elite were never strong candidates to compete.
