12's - NFVB
13's - VFX
14's - NFVB
15's - NFVB
16's - VFX
17's - NFVB
18's - NFVB

Very well organized and played from a championship and regional perspective. I expect that all the teams representing WEVA will do well in Atlanta. Congrats Girls.

The 18's tourney was solid with a nice representation from the Paradigm, VFX and NFVB crew. The Finals was interesting with VFX rallying back from a 5 point deficit deep in game 1 to tie it. At times it was just sideout vs sideout ball. NFVB was fortunate to take advantage of missed serve and then pulled ahead with a 2 pt. win.

Game 2 saw 3 x 3pt leads from NFVB matched by VFX but finally the aggressive serving NFVB pulled ahead to close out the Final 25-13.

NFVB passing was pinpoint the whole match and Rachel Stoklosa, Bridget Shanahan, Lauren Metzger and Heather Feldman were superb in their game today. congrats ladies.

Cudos to Liz Scott and Nik Attea for battling through their wounds today.....great players and huge hearts!!

Don't forget Kendall Pierce with a deep bone bruise in her foot that has kept her out of practices off and on for the past two weeks. Very difficult to beat solid teams 3-4 times in one year: these girls did just that. Congrats for a dominant showing.

The NFVB 18's fought through injury, ineligibility,& the inexperience replacing it. Well done ladies, well done.

On the younger end of the tournament, NFVB 12-1 and VFX 13-1 both have more serving than any team at those age levels should have to deal with. No team in our area has an answer for Megan Neelon (NFVB) and Ally Smith (VFX) each of whom dominate their respective level. I expect both of these teams to be competitive in Atlanta.

The 14s final between NFVB and VFX was inspiring to watch. At the risk of sounding cliche, what those young ladies on both sides of the net put out on that court was what sports are supposed to be about. Each team was intense in competition and gracious in both victory and defeat.

Congrats to all WEVA teams and good luck to those who will certainly represent us well at Nationals!

17s, Pool A NFVB17-1 1st, BVA 2nd Cayuga 3rd, Pool B NFVB17-2 1st, vfx 2nd NFVB white 3rd. Playoffs QTRS VFX beat Cayuga, BVA defeated NFVB white. Semi NFVB 17-2 defeated BVA, NFVB 17-1 defeated VFX. Finals NFVB 17-1 defeated NFVB 17-2 in 2, 25-18 and not sure but I think it was 25-15 range.

If only USA Volleyball was all about doing what's best for the kid instead of "how much can we make" the sport would be much better off; and registered players wishing to play college ball in the states would not be ruled ineligible and held in limbo as we speak.

In the 15s Pool

NFVB 15-1 8-0
NFVB 15-2 6-2
Xtreme 15-1 4-4
VFX Chant 2-6
NFVB 15 White 0-8

VFX's big outside went down with an ankle injury late in game 2 in the loss against NFVB 15-2. She was the majority of their offense. Nice player. No one touched NFVB 15-1 all day.

In the 16s,

Pool A

VFX 3-0
Cobra 2-1

Pool B

NFVB 16-1 3-0
BVA 2-1

Semis

VFX d. BVA 2-0
NFVB d. Cobra 2-0

VFX won handily in the final. Kudos for NFVB 16-1 for putting together after almost not even qualifying in the top 8 (They were seeded 8th). Their top OH sprained her ankle and didn't participate.

Interesting thing this year was that no final was really a knock-down drag-out. Most were well controlled by winning team throughout, while the two that were close at all (18's & 14's) were tight for awhile but the winning team ended winning in dominant fashion.
Other notes:
12's winner: dominant player in Megan Neelon
13's winner: ditto in Ally Smith
14's winner: Possibly most balanced team. Can side-out equally well in every rotation.
15's winner: two very advanced players in Crandall and young Pierce.
16's winner: 1st rate OH 1 & 2 combo in young Schirmer and Tyler. Very tall MB in Vetere too.
17's winner: RS Moser blocks with arms nearly horizontal to floor. Good defenders.
18's winner: Superior setter & 2 kids who touch the bball rim (and another nearly nicking it); defense got a lot better throughout year.

Another fine seeding job!!! ha ha I am still waiting for the day the region steps up and takes better control of tournament seedings instead of the "its your tournament seed it as you wish" attitude. this approach would be fine unless there is money involved, oops, paying for the National entry or season ending tournament fees......

Have to agree that the seeding was a mess.

The system, whatever it is, needs to be rectified if it is to look anything other than invalid & therefore irrelevant.

An additional bummer on the day is that play except for from more seasoned teams, also seemed to be a bit haphazard. Many teams made many, many unforced errors. Pressure looked like it was an unfamiliar entity for many of the squads.

Let's hope the sun shines soon.

Looking at Weva past results, there were a number of scenarios in which head to head appears to have been ignored. Or maybe they are not in the formula for determining seeds. That's seems dumb, though. 18's especially was messed up if head-to-head counts.

A couple of notes:

It is really enjoyable to see so many former players coming back to support the present players. It added nicely to the atmosphere. I recognized some parents of former players too.

Also great to see that many younger players who played on Saturday came back on Sunday to support the older girls. Looked like entire teams came back.

Again, what a great facility. The place was buzzing with excitement all day. Great to have the entire tourney under one roof in a place specifically designed for vb.

and for my only negative (but mostly humorous) observation, I guess the powers that be decided to ignore guidelines about # number of coaches on one bench. I counted 7+ repeatedly on one team's bench. Reminds me the old joke, "How many idiots does it take to screw in a light bulb?..." I mean, come on! Maybe it's for an attempt at intimidation or to show unity, but it's just kinda silly, never mind distracting. Thank God they stuck with the 6 players on the court at one time rule.

the seeding process is outlined on the WEVA website- juniors, tournaments, regional rankings, and then click the link for the guidelines. there is a process. Not to say its perfect, but it is there. Just curious which age level people think that the two best teams didn't reach the finals? (the old- semifinal is really the final thing).

Seeding guidelines using points should be just that. Use them as a starting point. There should still be a face to face meeting (as in the past) to consider the factors that numbers don't see. Actual strength of tournaments, head to head record, etc.
