Telauna D. is a senior at Marshall High School. She actually only played in 2 matches this fall. It took all 3 years of high school and a couple months this fall to even get her on the court. She is 6-5 and probably touches around 10-3. Mississippi St. offered her a scholarship on pure potential!

Well, if you're female, 6'5", possessing of extraordinary hops and seriously superior athleticism, that may be the way to go. But if not, for those who even want to play in college these days, I'd suggest the club route.

Besides, acquiring the athletic schollie is one thing, possessing the tools to navigate the choppy waters of D-I athletics is another. A good club program will help you develop the kind of relentless fight, ability to accept and overcome adversity, and endurance you'll need to survive, let alone thrive. Let's hope this girl can figure it all out, but with apparently little background in highly competitive sports, it might be an awakening on more than one level.

To the last point, a good club program will also provide a support network for these kids even after they leave. The relationships these kids form with some of their club coaches and teammates prove invaluable in the years to come. Clubs often get kids coming back during breaks-or texting, emailing, calling-looking for guidance or just a much needed boost of confidence. A mother of a former player told me recently that her daughter, now at a D-I school, struggled with self-doubt and the rigors of preseason (which is particularly brutal at this school) so much that she comtemplated quitting. She didn't simply because she did not want to disappoint a couple of club coaches in her past. And now, of course, she is very glad she stuck with it.

Who needs parents, relatives, non-volleyball friends, religion, etc. if you have club volleyball?

I love watching and playing volleyball but it is just a tiny piece of the puzzle. I hope.

Ok, Aged. Now you're just being ignorant. You just took a very honest and sensible offering of what a club experience can do for a kid looking to play college vball, and responded in a way that shows you know nothing of the subject.

Of course, family and friends are important, but you obviously know nothing of what being on scholarship at a D-I school means. Often times, parents and friends know little of the demands and complications of that world, and therefore can offer little help or advice. And to say that in this girl's case, volleyball will be "just a tiny piece of the puzzle" is erroneous. She's on SCHOLARSHIP!! It's a HUGE part of her going there. I mean would a kid from Marshall HS in Rochester be going to Mississippi State if it weren't for the vb scholarship!!?? Ahhh...never mind.

I'm trusting Aged was being sarcastic? At least I'm hoping.

Hey if you've got scholarships aplenty and can offer them to someone solely on potential, that must be a pretty nice freakin life.

Yeah, I would say club volleyball helps prepare a girl for the speed of the game, the increased demands etc. But in reality, a really well run high school program can serve as great preparation too, especially if they run tough 2/3 a day preseasons.

Travel though- if your college travels, you become much more used to that in club- or at least have an opportunity to. Much more rare in HS.

Thanks for the clarification on the girl from Marshall- good luck to her.

I heard the Chance sisters played high school volleyball and did not participate in club volleyball. They both received D-1 scholarships from astonished college coaches attending their high school practices. Yes, Slim & None did very well for themselves.

According to prepvolleyball.com, add NFVB's Nikki Attea to the list of commitments: Maryland Terps, 2012.

Congrats to Nikki.
