NFVB 15-1s Club Team Wins National Championship
History was made on June 28th after the NFVB 15-1s team went undefeated at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Niagara Frontier Volleyball 15 and under team arrived in the land of 10,00 lakes on Wednesday to begin a 4 day tournament against the top teams in the country. The squad comprised of 10 local players from various Western New York high schools went 11-0 through pool play and playoffs to upset the number one seeded team and last year’s champion from Northern Kentucky in 3 games 23-25, 25-19, 15-3. This is the first time a volleyball team from upstate NY has won a national championship of this magnitude.A huge crowd appeared in the center court venue at the Minneapolis Convention Center to witness the exciting three set match. USA Volleyball live streamed and commentated the finals over the internet giving parents, relatives and club members the opportunity to share the experience back home in Western New York.
Defensive specialist Lindsay Proctor (Grand Island HS) and outside hitter Samantha Burgio (Eden HS) were named to the All-Tournament team while setter Meghan Neelon (Clarence HS) was named the Tournament MVP.
48 teams from across the country competed in the 15 and under division and over 1200 teams from ages 11 through 18 participate in the national championship event.
The 15 and under team was one of three Niagara Frontier teams participating in the tournament. The 16 and 17s teams begin play today and Monday. The NFVB 15-1s, 16-1s and 17-1s each earned a bid to the tournament back in May.
All three NFVB teams are participating in the National Division of their respective age groups. Teams must obtain a bid to participate. National bids are allocated to the USA Volleyball Regions (ours is the Western Empire Volleyball Association) for distribution to its teams. The GJNC field size for each National Divisions is 48 teams.
