History was made on June 28th after the NFVB 15-1s team went undefeated at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Niagara Frontier Volleyball 15 and under team arrived in the land of 10,00 lakes on Wednesday to begin a 4 day tournament against the top teams in the country. The squad comprised of 10 local players from various Western New York high schools went 11-0 through pool play and playoffs to upset the number one seeded team and last year’s champion from Northern Kentucky in 3 games 23-25, 25-19, 15-3. This is the first time a volleyball team from upstate NY has won a national championship of this magnitude.A huge crowd appeared in the center court venue at the Minneapolis Convention Center to witness the exciting three set match. USA Volleyball live streamed and commentated the finals over the internet giving parents, relatives and club members the opportunity to share the experience back home in Western New York.
Defensive specialist Lindsay Proctor (Grand Island HS) and outside hitter Samantha Burgio (Eden HS) were named to the All-Tournament team while setter Meghan Neelon (Clarence HS) was named the Tournament MVP.
48 teams from across the country competed in the 15 and under division and over 1200 teams from ages 11 through 18 participate in the national championship event.
The 15 and under team was one of three Niagara Frontier teams participating in the tournament. The 16 and 17s teams begin play today and Monday. The NFVB 15-1s, 16-1s and 17-1s each earned a bid to the tournament back in May.
All three NFVB teams are participating in the National Division of their respective age groups. Teams must obtain a bid to participate. National bids are allocated to the USA Volleyball Regions (ours is the Western Empire Volleyball Association) for distribution to its teams. The GJNC field size for each National Divisions is 48 teams.

Age Divisions:
Open Juniors - any players 18 and under
15 & Under - must qualify as a 15s player or below per USAV guidelines

At present, WEVA is sending 9 teams to Nationals, which is one of highest numbers we've sent. It is a testament to the continued growth in our regions, if not in numbers, in talent and skill.
The NFVB 14-1's are in the conversation for an at-large bid for the Open level at 14's as well. Although the likelihood of their getting the bid is unlikely (given all the bubble teams from Cali, Texas, and the midwest), if they do get it, their National bid would trickle down to the next Weva team...and the region would be sending 10 teams, something it has never done to my knowledge.

In 18's both Niagara Frontier and LI Academy made the "Honorable Mention" list. Probably something like top 100.
In 15's Niagara Frontier 15-1 came in at #15. That's 15th in the nation. Not sure if any NY team ever finished that high. Great job.

On a side note, the decision to keep the Qualifier bid winners (this year NFVB 15-1 and VFX 14-1s) out of the tourney is the right move. As much as it would be enjoyable to see those teams play in the event, it could really skew the outcome. In fact, the upset win in 15 & Under might never have come about had the NFVB 15s been there as Octane might have got eliminated in semis and couldn't have been eligible for even a trickle down bid.

The Camp will be July 9-12, at the Main Street Armory, and we will be offering our youth camp and full day camp. Youth camp is for boys and girls grades K-5 and will run 9am - 12pm. Full day camp is for girls grades 6-12 and will run 9am - 3:30pm.
The 4's Grass League will be held at Nazareth College again this year and will be on Tuesday nights. The league will run Tuesday June 19 - Tuesday July 24, and is for ages 14-22.

The Western Empire Volleyball Association is pleased to announce the formation of a region High Performance Program for the 2012 season.
The Western Empire Volleyball Association HP Program is designed to further develop the top junior volleyball players in our region by expanding the opportunities our players have to train and gain national level experience. For our athletes, the goals of the program include providing top-level skill development and training, additional exposure to collegiate coaches, and providing elite region players with the opportunity to compete in the highest level junior tournament available in the United States by representing WEVA at the High Performance Championships against the best players from other regions and other countries. We also look to provide additional and unique development opportunities for our region’s elite and aspiring coaches.
WEVA looks to form one boys’ team in the Youth or Select age group and one girls’ team in the Youth or Select age group with the goal of attending the High Performance Championships at the end of July.
WEVA strongly encourages all its players and coaches to get involved in WEVA HP!!!
How are players selected?
Players are selected through a multi-tiered competitive tryout process in compliance with USA Volleyball National Team Development Standards. Athletes who wish to be part of the WEVA HP Program will attend two WEVA HP tryouts. From those two tryouts, the HP Staff will ask a certain number of athletes back for a third tryout. At the conclusion of tryout #3, the HP Staff will invite players to the WEVA HP Camp and to participate as members of the WEVA HP travel team that competes in the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in July.

What is High Performance?
USA Volleyball is the National Governing Body for the sport of volleyball in the United States. It establishes and manages the USA National Men's and Women's Volleyball Teams, the USA Olympic Teams, and also USA Youth and Junior National Teams for each gender. The Youth and Junior National Teams, along with a number of tiered training programs, fall under the High Performance (HP) Department. The High Performance Program works to advance volleyball talent and build a broader and stronger pipeline of athletes and coaches for our USA Olympic Teams. HP is designed to bridge the gap between our USA National Teams and youth volleyball programs across the country. This is done through a system of national tryouts that qualify athletes for training programs, camps, and youth and junior national teams. The HP Program at USA Volleyball is the “pipeline†for volleyball athletes who aspire to reach the elite levels of the sport.

As defined in the dictionary, commitment is the “act of pledging and agreeing to someone, something or an idea fully and completely.â€
For Amy Zimmer commitment is re-learning volleyball, joining a new club, driving three hours total to and from practice, three days a week, clocking hours of gym time and missing holidays and birthday parties. And to her it is all worth it.
“I would never have been able to experience this or know that I can make a career out of volleyball if I hadn’t jumped in whole-heartedly and dedicated my whole life to this,†Zimmer said.
The 6-1 soon-to-be senior at Port Huron Northern High School in Port Huron, Mich., has been playing volleyball for six years and recently joined the Michigan Elite Volleyball Association two years ago.
“I come from a small town and volleyball isn’t big there,†Zimmer said. “I heard about Michigan Elite from one of my teammates and I decided to make the commitment to join the club when I realized I wanted to make volleyball a career for myself.
Her dream of becoming an Olympian is well on its way. Zimmer has her blinders on and is focused on her goal of being a successful volleyball player. She plans to sign with a college upon the conclusion of the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships, spanning Aug. 25-30 in Tucson, Ariz.
“Hard work pays off,†Zimmer said. “To get here I had to learn volleyball over again after my sophomore year. I changed clubs and had to correct my fundamentals when I started playing nationally.â€
Young athletes take the good with the bad when it comes to time-consuming activities such as volleyball. Zimmer has had to give up many moments to get to where she is today but she feels that those moments are made-up ten fold with the memories made at tournaments like the High Performance Championships.
“Its hard sometimes because my social life takes a beating,†Zimmer said. “I have missed some holidays and even had to cancel my own birthday party but it is all worth it. I get to participate in tournaments like this and get to interact and hang out with new people every day. You can’t beat it.â€
In her sophomore year, Zimmer changed clubs forcing her and her parents to travel an hour and a half in each direction to get the to weekly practices. She had to clock extra training time on a daily basis to get her skill level to where it needed to be. With her recent success and rostered position on the USAV HP Girls’ Youth A2 Blue team, she says that she shocked a lot of people.
“Never give up,†Zimmer said. “A lot of people back home might be surprised that I am here. I can’t even believe I am here sometimes. It is such an honor and I will continue to push through and get better.â€
The 2011 USAV HP Championships is the culmination of why the Michigan native puts all of her efforts into volleyball. She says that the friendships she makes at these tournaments are those for a lifetime and maybe, just maybe, more important than taking first place.
“When we were here training our coach let us play games and invited the Chinese to play with us,†Zimmer said. “Though we couldn’t verbally communicate with them, it didn’t matter because we didn’t need to. Facial expressions are universal and when we smiled and laughed so did they. A friendship was created right then and now every time we pass them we wave.â€
Zimmer added that she is an example of a volleyball product that comes out of a small Michigan town, not California or any other geographical locations that sometimes seem like volleyball-making machines.
“I think kids all over the country can be part of USA Volleyball,†Zimmer said. “We need to get the word out about this kind of stuff because there are kids in small cities like me that may not know what is available to them if they are willing to work hard.â€
In addition to the high-level of play offered at the HP Championships teams have the opportunity to share with each other their cultural traditions.
“I love meeting players from other parts of the country, especially Hawaii,†Zimmer said. “I never would have guessed that I would be sitting in the hallway of a hotel in Tucson singing with the Aloha region while they played the ukulele. Where else can kids do that?â€
The voyage to Tucson is six years in the making for Zimmer. With NCAA Division I and II offers pouring in she is even closer to her volleyball-career goals. One thing the outside hitter won’t forget are the people who have cleared the path to get her to where she is today.
“I owe a thank you to a lot of people,†Zimmer said. “My parents have driven me long distances for volleyball and I have two other siblings they have to cater to as well. I wouldn’t be at this championship if it weren’t for the sponsorship of my grandmother. She is the reason I am here.â€
Currently undefeated, Zimer and her USA Volleyball Girls’ Youth A2 Blue team have their eyes on the prize. The team is competing in the Girls’ International division and defeated the USAV Girls’ Youth A2 White team and the International Youth team from Iowa, Tuesday.
“It is truly an honor to wear the USA on my back,†Zimmer said. “I don’t and never will take that for granted. I am playing volleyball for my country and that is the greatest of all things.â€]]>

"This is all detailed in the USAV Junior Girls Qualifier Manual and probably a lot clearer than I can explain it, but here you go:
There are teams within regions that for whatver reason elect not to use the bid they qualified for. The region has their own "trickle down" procedure for giving out these bids within their regions and in the larger regions this is how they are taken. For smaller regions they at times end up with no teams that want to take that bid. Those regions give the bid bad to USAV and it goes into the Reallocation Pool. Also, bids can only trickle down so many places at Qualifiers. If they dont give those out they to into the Reallocation Pool. Also, qualifier tournaments that dont have the required number of teams to give out as many bids, have those extra bids go to the Reallocation Pool.
The Reallocated NATIONAL bids are given to the regions based on the number of athletes in their regions. The region with the most athletes is offered the first reallocation bid, and so on (the largest regions get the bids).
The Reallocated AMERICAN bids are offered based on how close a region is to what they refer to as a "Bench". The "Bench" is a total number of athletes that is used to base how many AMERICAN bids a region gets. The closer you are to the next "Bench" the higher on the list you are for a Reallocated AMERICAN bid."]]>
